If you’re familiar at all with my writing, you knew damn well when I created that title I had no intention of going on about the sexy side of the industry. You already know the sexy parts. Daydreaming about the decor of your treatment room. Fantasizing over square footage and logos. Business cards, menus, brochures and postcards. Memberships, packages, PROFITS PROFITS PROFITS!
There! I said it. That’s exciting right? That’s what you spend hours researching. Joining social media groups to get information and feedback. Please stop focusing on the sexy side of this industry and spend more time on the stuff that makes you roll your eyes!
Here’s my challenge to you. Find a group that doesn’t just boast about the successes you can achieve. Join a group that talks about financial projections not just how much you can make per year if you work on 20 clients a week and charge them $75/hour. Join a group that discusses managing memberships not just pricing them. Join a group that discusses how to recruit and RETAIN good employees, not just how much you should pay them. Join a group that discusses elite customer service not just how to slap them in the face with a policy. Join a group where the creator admits they FAILED a few times before figuring out how to do it right! Join a group that celebrates the small victories without getting content. Join a group that encourages you to grow beyond your current level. Join a group that doesn’t just say “You can do it” but actually TELLS YOU HOW!
Too many people are fine with just saying they can associate themselves with someone who is successful. That’s never been me. It’s not enough for me to say I know someone successful, I want to be successful too! How does it help me to say “I know her! She has an amazing business,” if none of those profits are coming to me?
So here is an action step for you to take. If you’re in a group or have a coach that is more focused on selling you the dream of business ownership instead of telling you how to get from concept to reality, do yourself a favor and leave them! In order to make it in this business, you better get used to people telling you your price is too high, last minute cancellations, no shows, bad reviews, failed payments, competitors lurking, flakey staff, odd requests, and seasonal swings! Find someone who understands what it feels like to fail and find courage to start again. Find someone who understands the struggle of moving your practice to another city, another state, another country! Find someone who understands what it takes to hire, train, retain and fire staff. Find someone who understands what it feels like to invest thousands in marketing efforts with zero return on investment. Find someone who actually cares whether your business succeeds and is not simply looking for a quick dollar. Find someone who knows what it’s like to work in a room with clients all day, come home to kids all night and the only free second you have to think about your business is after midnight. Find someone WHO GETS IT!
